When Carl Cox steps up to the DJ booth, the energy hits instantly, fans often say he helped shape modern techno and house music. He rose through the UK rave scene in the 1980s and went on to host one of Ibiza’s most legendary residencies at Space Ibiza from 2001 until 2016.

He is known for his technical skill behind three turntables and his ability to build headline-worthy shows with his “Carl Cox & Friends” stage at major festivals. He left his long-term Ibiza residency when Space changed ownership and he felt the club no longer aligned with his vision for music.

Early Life

Carl Cox was born on July 29, 1962 in Oldham, England to Barbadian parents. He grew up around music at home and started DJing at age 15 when he bought his first set of turntables and worked as a mobile DJ playing discos and parties. During his teenage years he lived in Carshalton, south London, then later moved to Brighton.

Career

Carl Cox began his professional DJ work in the mid 1980s when he played at UK raves and clubs, becoming known for using three turntables and mixing house and techno music. Early in the 1990s he released his first singles and mix albums, and he founded his own label Intec Records around 1999. From 2001 to 2016 he held a long running residency at the club Space Ibiza in Spain under the name “Music is Revolution”, and he also created his stage concept “Carl Cox & Friends” which toured major festivals worldwide.

In the 2010s and beyond he relaunched his label as Intec Digital and founded another label, Awesome Soundwave, while continuing to produce music, headline festivals and promote underground techno and house artists.
